South of
the Fraser
Richmond, Delta, Surrey, and White Rock are distinct communities linked by their locations south of the Fraser River. These good neighbours have much in common, yet they also have their own unique stories to share.
Incorporated as a municipality in 1879, Richmond has deep roots in the fishing and canning industry. Visit two national historic sites in the quaint fishing village of Steveston and Five Roads Tasting Room where you can taste a delicious range of beers brewed at Five Roads Brewing in Langley. Next, head to Fuggles Beer Co. where the approach is to think outside the box – indeed, its motto is “Keeping Beer Weird.” Looking for a taphouse with some Richmond history? O’Hares Gastropub and its adjacent liquor store have been around for over 30 years. And Monkey 9 Brewing offers something for everyone: delicious craft beer for adults and a chance to bowl a strike at the attached bowling alley for families.
Delta, the southwestern tip of mainland BC, includes the communities of Ladner, Tsawwassen, and North Delta. This diverse municipality has it all: an urban/multicultural vibe, deep historical roots, as well as agriculture, beaches, and parks. It is home to one of Canada’s best breweries, Four Winds Brewing, a past winner of both Brewery of the Year and Beer of the Year at the Canadian Brewing Awards. Delta is also where you will find the farm-based Barnside Brewing, which was founded by neighbouring farmers who collectively grow their own barley and hops while using additional ingredients from other local farmers. You will also find a wide range of local craft beer options at the One20 Pub and Mario’s Kitchen.
Surrey is BC’s second-largest city and its fastest-growing, set to outpace Vancouver before too long. It offers something for everyone, including parks, performing arts, shopping, sports, and, of course, craft beer. Check out Russell Brewing, which has been a leader of the craft beer movement in BC since 1995 and now has a tasting room! Newly opened in the fall of 2022 s Tap & Barrel South Surrey with 30 BC Craft beer taps.
White Rock, next to South Surrey is a popular, beachfront community with a burgeoning craft beer scene that was kicked off several years ago by two school teachers who opened White Rock Beach Beer and continue to brew delicious, approachable beers. Dog lovers should definitely check out 3 Dogs Brewing, founded by a local family that pours all of their passion into the beer. Also check out 3 Dogs’ “sister” location, The Beer Shack, located in their previous location. And third on the scene is Galaxie Craft Brewhouse. Based in an old 1950s BC Tel building and located just steps from West Beach, Galaxie is serving up classic North American-style brews with a space theme.
Explore all that these neighbours have to offer: history, culture, activities, and, of course, a passion for craft beer.
