As fall fades to winter, the veil between the worlds of the living and the
dead thins, allowing spirits of the departed to return to visit. Fearful of
these wandering spirits, some people wear masks to fool them into believing
that they too are from the other world, also leaving food on their doorsteps
to dissuade hungry ghosts from entering the house. Others celebrate the lives
of loved ones who have passed away, welcoming them home with offerings and
festivities.
