Langley

Rich in history, urban experiences and fresh craft beer.

Langley has always rewarded bold adventurers.

At Fort Langley, which was built by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1827, fur traders exchanged furs, salmon and cranberries with local Indigenous communities. It is also the spot where BC was proclaimed a British colony in 1858. Now, it is a National Historic Site, a scenic spot where that history comes to life through demonstrations of blacksmithing and barrel-making and other interpretive programs. It is also the location of Brewhalla, an annual beer-and-music festival.

Today, Langley offers adventurers a tantalizing mix of urban and rural experiences, reflected by its local breweries through their bold and creative beer and food menus, which often incorporate local ingredients or historic themes in their brands. Located in the heart of the Fraser Valley, yet still an easy drive from Vancouver or the border, this ale trail encompasses Langley as well as several local communities, including Aldergrove, Walnut Grove, and Fort Langley.

Langley’s burgeoning craft beer community got its start more than 20 years ago when Dead Frog Brewery (originally named Backwoods Brewing) opened in Aldergrove. Flash forward to 2016 when Trading Post Brewing became the first brewery to open in Langley itself. After that, the floodgates opened — since then, several more breweries have joined this scene, including Camp Beer Co., Farm Country Brewing, and Five Roads Brewing

Nearby is Kwantlen Polytechnic University, which offers BC’s only Brewing Diploma, a two-year program that has trained hundreds of future brewers, many of whom work in the province’s craft beer industry today. The KPU Beer Lab has won many awards, including BC Brewery of the Year in 2019. It is open to the public for beer sales on Friday afternoons.

Langley has another craft beer hub that is easily accessible off the Trans-Canada Highway, with Dead Frog Brewing’s new location, Smugglers’ Trail Caskworks, and the Barley Merchant Taproom & Kitchen with 50 rotating BC exclusive taps. Langley’s newest brewery is Brookswood Brewing, already a community hub for the neighbourhood it is named after.

Based on a 96-acre farm that has been owned and operated by one family for generations, Locality Brewing offers the unique opportunity to taste beer brewed with ingredients grown and processed on-site.

And be sure to stock up on your favourites at Angry Otter Liquor on 248th.
